Amazon.com’s business in India has been expanding rapidly, but internal diseconomies of scale are preventing the operations from running smoothly.

Rather than focusing on others' experiences, I’ll share two simple instances where Amazon.com is losing money in India:

  1. I ordered a pair of crocs, but the size I received was larger than my feet. I applied for a refund and return. While the money was refunded, the seller never came to collect the shoes. It’s been over a year now, and the shoes are still with me.

  2. I ordered a Maths Olympiad book for my child, but received a Mathematics book meant for JEE/IIT instead. The value of the book I received is much higher than the Math Olympiad book I originally ordered. Though the book is not useful to me, I’ve been waiting for any follow-up on the issue, but there’s been no query or response after two months.

These are clear examples of revenue leakage. While the amounts involved may be small for Amazon, these inefficiencies add up over time and contribute to losses.

Online Games to earn

With the introduction of Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) in September 2018 , the game has changed for online game lovers and earners. Those who has played PUBG, they have witnessed a sharp increase in their youtube subscribers. PUBG is the game of the season and has caught on like wildfire. Although a ban on PUBG, it has not affected the willingness to play for players and fans.

As per the survey of Hootsuite and We are Social, 31% of Internet users in India say that they play games whil 30% say they watch these live streams.

Youtube is the frontrunner for live-streaming video games. Vidooly has informed that it is now tracking 400 plus gaming channels on You Tube in India. 

Maximum revenue from You Tube channel comes from brand integration, following by superchat, sponsorships and Google Adsense. People have started to tie up with HP, Mivi, One plus and sponsorship from Omelet Arcade.

Online money making video games are increasing day by day. Playing games online is now a full time profession as youngsters who are good at computers like to play for earning money. There are 560 million number of internet users in India which rose by 20 percent between Jan 2018 and Jan 2019 thanks to the high speed internet and cheap data.
Google has announced a cloud based video game streaming service called Stadia, which can be used on any device with a chrome browser, Google Pixel devices and television with Chromecast. This means players need not download games and do not require expensive systems. The Netflix like service would make it possible to play games directly on internet connected devices. Stadia is expected to be launched later this year !!



Chaiiwala ..UK's iconic cafe chain of Indian traditional street food with modern twist

A new chain of eateries will be visible in your neighborhood and near your office places in next couple of months or so. The name of the new chain of eateries is very much desi but it claims that it is an iconic cafe chain in UK. We are talking about 'chaiiwala' i.e. the person who prepares and sells tea.

'Chaiiwala' word got famous after Mani Shankar Aiyer's remarks on Indian Prime Minister 'Narendra Modi' in 2014 elections which was adored by BJP and they just bought the word 'chaiiwala' and publicized the word in such a manner that Indian denizens started to think Narendra Modi is closer to them. Everybody knows our PM was a tea maker / seller in his younger days , we hear stories only and a few pictures but not conclusively that for how long he sold tea before entering active politics.


When I saw the advertisement first in a magazine 'Entrepreneur's April 2019  edition, I thought somebody from BJP has encashed this Idea and probably it could be but I am not sure. However directly indirectly it is very much inspired by remark on Narendra Modi.

Now our PM got another name 'Choukidaar' , so we may expect a security agency by name 'Choukidaar' .... not a bad concept.. probably somebody might have registered an entity in the name of Choukidaar..

Chaiiwala will face competition from Teajunction , Teapoint, CCD, Starbucks, Barista... but as an advice of a common man ... a common man does not like tea of such a big shops... they may spend time and hold business meetings or interview meetings at such junctions but nobody likes the tea. People likes tea of INR 10 , INR 7 available at nearby shops so Chaiiwala may prepare tea of the same taste .. 

Priyanka Chopra engaged to Nick Jonas

Couples with considerable age difference are always in news , specially when woman is older than her groom. I remember when Sachin Tendulkar married Dr. Anjali, people talked a lot and some of the people speculated that the marriage may not subsist for long. Anjali is around 10 years older than Sachin , however the marriage is successful and they always looked happy and joyful. Between Sachin and Anjali , Sachin was famous in India and cricket playing nations , however Anjali was never so famous. Although Nick and Priyanka both are celebrities but , Priyanka  is more famous than Nick Jonas even in USA due to Bollywood connections and Baywatch.

Indians were shocked about the age differences, however Priyanka never cared about comments of people and proceeded with her inner conscience which is never wrong. 

There are various news and information about much waited marriage across the world and media is following them big time. Say for example,  currently Priyanka and Nick Jonas are enjoying Holidays in Mexico and people are viewing their videos. 

If we see the pictures of Priyanka and Nick together, both seem to be very much relaxed and confident. They do not express much love and affection towards each other and the relationship is very much planned and we may see its effect in coming years. I do not see love in their eyes specially in the eyes of Priyanka (may be I am completely wrong as nobody can understand a woman :) ) So lets see the reasons for selection of Nick Jonas by Priyanka for marriage from a different point of view : 

  • Priyanka's bollywood career is not over but she has started her career in Hollywood. The best age to work in Hollywood by a woman is 35 to 45 years and Americans / British do not care about marital status and age of a woman on the screen. Unlike India, they are very much fair to see a woman on the screen and do not discriminate between a married heroine and unmarried girl. Like Aiswariya, her career was almost over in a lead role once she married to Abhishek Bacchan although she is still prettier than Priyanka. Priyanka's team understood that ex- Miss India Priyanka would fly in Hollywood rather than Bollywood. Aiswaryia Rai never thought from such an angle otherwise she could be atleast a Bond Girl in one of the James Bond Movies. However Priyanka Chopra must be eyeing on a role with Tom Cruise, Richard Gere, George Clooney, Leonardo or with James Bond / Daniel Craig. 
  • In order to proceed with such a plan, she got a house in New York City and easily she may get permanent residential status in USA , although it does not matter much to her. She has so much money that she may roam around India and USA. 
  • Movies and TV shows is such a line in which young male and female come together in a funny environment and most of the times they come closer and get intimated. Even in case of Priyanka Chopra that she started to like Akshay Kumar during  shooting of the movie Aitraaz. After a strong protest by Akshay's wife Twinkle, they could not come together in a movie in last 10 years. Also, there is another interesting thing - if she marries an Indian a social restriction always bind a woman. Directly or Indirectly she has to follow certain rules which may not allow her to excel professionally after marriage or becoming mom. Again, Aiswariya, Twinkle Khanna, Kajol, Shilpa Shetty, Sonali etc. faced similar problems. However, thanks to brains of team Priyanka that they planned a new lease for Priyanka's international career. 
  • To remain in Hollywood, a woman has to come up with a bold character and she has to show her assets on the screen. During Baywatch, Priyanka did not hasitate to flaunt her body and everybody watched perfectly alinged cleavages. Her holiday pictures of bathing in two pieces in America without being disturbed by people unlike India. Such freedom may not be possible with an Indian mindset Husband. 
  • Now Age difference, - Nick knows that his wife is quite elder than him and Priyanka's body is perfect for an American. A lot of American celebrities do not care for age difference and carries the relationship till everything is good. If a celebrity is not getting media attention , they may announce separation from their spouse and get media attention. There will always be a risk in this relationship. 
  • Priyanka knows that she can easily mentor a younger guy and enjoy a family life too. Nick may not much  put nose in her business and growing profession in Hollywood. 
Currently their families are meeting and waiting for their marriage. We should wait for time when the relationship progress with the time .All the best to the couple. 

ebay.in merging in to Flipkart

During initial years of Internet in India www.baazi.com was a leading site to purchase and sell products online. The populartity of baazi attracted EBAY of US and baazi was taken over by www.ebay.in. Regulations were changed and the business revamped completely.

Ebay.in was never seller friendly and it was always pro buyer. Even the largest seller never knew when he would be suspended without indicating the exact reasons. The suspension rule was never transparent and sometimes an honest or a large seller used to be suspended.

Time went.. ebay.in went powerful . Thousands of sellers from middle class families became seller in to ebay.in but no seller can say that ebay.in was their only business. Everybody knows, he could be suspended at anytime. Hence the business was always risky.

With the emergence of various big time online sellers selling books, merchandises, phones and other items with deep discount, ebay.in ultimately realised that it cannot sustain in the long run. Number of sellers on ebay.in got reduced , however faithful buyers never left ebay for purchasing second items, antiques, refurbished phones etc. At last one day we all heard that flipkart purchased Indian part of ebay i.e. the big www.ebay.in became part of flipkart.com

Flipkart carried on  ebay as separate entity on its usual model and perhaps never interfered in its non transparent policies. However, flipkart allowed sellers of ebay for international sale at ebay.com.

Online selling has never been easy... snapdeal, jabong, flipkart, etc etc never earned profit. Naturally these sites are always meant to be sold or resold. Flipkart got offers from Amazon and Walmart. ... and one fine day Flipkart became a part of Walmart. So obviously ebay.in could not be part of Ebay or possibly the strategy of flipkart relating to ebay could not give the expected results.

Now, ebay.in is being finished and now all sellers may approach flipkart to register themselves and magic of ebay may be recreated over flipkart.

People earned a lot of money from ebay or they experienced power of selling in India. We shall always miss ebay.in. From 14th of August 2018, we may not purchase or sell at ebay.in as per the notification of flipkart on the homepage of ebay.in . Sellers get surprised and those who have ample stock, there may not be an easier transition.

  • Basic principle of Trading : Sale - Cost = Profit . If you do not follow this principle , you cannot survive whoever you are, irrespective of your high paid strategies and efforts bestowed. 
  • Cost - Sale = Loss , may be followed on a very temporary basis to attract consumers to purchase goods through Internet but has to reach sooner to the Basic Principle as indicated above. 
  • So far, Flipkart has followed Cost - Sale = Loss policy to attract more and more consumers, educating consumers to buy online. It has habituated people to buy goods at low prices , higher discounts. I heard that its most valuable .com company of India . Valuation pundits might have evaluated the company for their prospective buyers but do they have indicated that selling at a price lower than cost would make the valuations intact ? 
  • Flipkart has gained popularity, purchased goods , properties on loan / equity funds infused by investors and bankers but how much it has contributed from retained earnings to ease debt ? How much it has distributed as  dividend to make its shares more valuable ? 
  • Buyers of flipkart have more money than Flipkart and reaching up to that level could be a pipedream for flipkart's promoters. They tried everything, they brought all prospective buyers to flipkart , but now they might short of strategies and new plans. 
  • So the best way ..... Exit ..... and get praise among Indians that promoters made so much money and now they can retire with a mammoth Bank Balance. 
  • Is it the real praise or Kudos ? Did Amazon Promoter think or acted positively to sell his company ? I never heard. The real fun and respect to carry on the business and compete with rivalries and beat them .
  • But perhaps Indian business schools , as seen in last ten year's trend, teach how to make business wealthier & Valuable ... but perhaps it still does not teach (or do not know ) how to make a business viable for ever and sustainable. 
  • I think Flipkart was on the verge of perform or perish. They realised , Indians can purchase at discount and deep discount or at free... They cannot let you make Super Normal Profit !! 
  • All the best to Bansals and would like to read the book he may write after a few months .. 
  • Bangalore start up kids will now not think to create online selling web sites. If they will , there will be only one objective either Amazon or Walmart or some other giant will buy their invention some day
